There are currently 21 films vying for the coveted Palme d’Or, with a record-breaking seven female directors.

As Depp makes his big-screen comeback in the historical drama Jeanne du Barry following a contentious court case involving charges of domestic abuse in his marriage to his ex-wife Amber Heard, it is the first movie that is generating the most buzz.

The director of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Fremaux, stated at a news conference that the 59-year-old actor had not been barred from appearing and that he was not disturbed by Depp’s reputation in the United States.

“If there is anyone in the world who is not interested in this highly mediatised trial, it is me. I don’t know what it is about. I am interested in Depp as an actor,” he said.

French actress Maiwenn, a vocal opponent of the #MeToo movement who was recently accused of assaulting a journalist in a Paris restaurant, is the film’s director and leading lady. This year’s Cannes Film Festival features a record-breaking seven female directors vying for the Palme d’Or.

Fremaux stated that there should be more women at the festival, but added, “I refuse congratulations, it is a progression. When choosing movies, we don’t consider the gender.

In the wake of a string of terrorist attacks in France in the 2010s, the festival is being guarded by about a thousand police officers and security personnel.

This year, festival organizers are also concerned about how recent demonstrations against President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reforms would damage the event.

During the event, all protests are prohibited in the vicinity of the Croisette, local authorities informed AFP, adding that this was the same as in years past.

But the CGT union has pledged to make its presence known, announcing a “fixed” protest in front of the storied Carlton Hotel on Friday and threatening last month to cut power throughout the event.

On Tuesday, the 60 meters (60 yards) long, fabled crimson carpet will be unrolled. Today, to save some 1,400 kg of carpet, its size has been divided in half as a gesture to environmental concerns.

Hollywood actors Brie Larson and Paul Dano are also members of the jury, which is chaired by Ruben Ostlund, the Palme d’Or winner from the previous year.

Several Palme laureates are back in the running, including Germany’s Wim Wenders, Britain’s two-time winner Ken Loach, and Japan’s Hirokazu Kore-eda.
