Grizzlies suspend Ja Morant following the release of second purported gun video.

After Ja Morant appeared to flash a pistol in an Instagram Live video two months after he was engaged in a similar incident, the Memphis Grizzlies banned the top player.

“We are aware of the social media post involving Ja Morant and are in the process of gathering more information,” NBA spokesperson Mike Bass said on Sunday.

The Grizzlies said that the suspension is “pending league review”.

This past weekend, video showing Morant riding in a car with a companion started to become viral on social media. The 23-year-old is briefly shown clutching what looks to be a gun at one point. Whether the weapon is real and whether Morant owns it are both unknown.

For Morant, one of the NBA’s most gifted young players, the video may have significant repercussions. After being caught on camera brandishing a pistol in a Colorado nightclub in March, the league banned Morant for eight games.

Ja’s conduct was irresponsible, reckless and potentially very dangerous, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in March after Morant’s suspension. “It also has serious consequences given his enormous following and influence, particularly among young fans who look up to him.”

After his suspension, Morant apologized several times and sought treatment. Additionally, he shut down his social media accounts.

Morant apologized profusely for his actions after completing his suspension. So, like I stated, my new responsibility is to be more responsible and intelligent and to stop causing any of that. Additionally, he said he needs to be “more responsible, smarter, and staying away from all the bad decisions.”

In relation to the incident in March, the police decided not to press charges against Morant, and the NBA came to the conclusion that the player did not own the pistol. He lost almost $669,000 in pay when he was suspended.

Even prior to the suspension in March, Morant’s actions had raised concerns. Members of the Indiana Pacers said that something that could have been a gun’s laser sight was directed at them following a game in January. During the game, Morant’s close friends fought with Pacers players.

Following an altercation at his house last summer, Morant is being sued. A 17-year-old says that Morant and a friend attacked him while they were playing basketball. The boy alleges that shortly after, Morant emerged from his home with a revolver. After looking into the reported occurrence, the district attorney in the area decided against filing a criminal complaint.

The Grizzlies finished second in the Western Conference during the regular season in 2022–23. In the opening round of the playoffs, they were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers.
